Recently I was listening to a podcast. Someone called in expressing their anxiety and anguish over the upcoming Presidential Election. It was a confession of hopelessness and their inability to effect change as an individual.
The gift we've received is the awareness of racism, cruelty and divisiveness within each of us and the country as a whole. It has been brought to the surface for us to confront, not with others but within ourselves.
Yes our elected officials can enact laws to protect people and force certain behaviors, but it will not remedy the underlying truth that racism, hatred, us vs them, is bred into many people from an early age and perpetuated by others throughout life as a form of control. This “education” can be seemingly benign all the way to extremely blatant. If you are a parent or grandparent, you play an extremely important role in the beliefs you instill in your family that will likely last a lifetime.
A change in leadership of the country won’t make negative energy go away. It would maybe push it underground and we can be more naive about where many people in our country stand but it doesn’t make lasting change.
If you are reading this and thinking “yeah, I’m good, it’s those other people.” Wrong. We all do it to some degree but feel justified in our cause. The definition of hypocrisy: the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform.
We ALL must sit with this and do our part. You can’t say you feel sorry for a rich, privileged, white family that contracts Covid and be unwilling to say that ‘Black Lives Matter’. If we can’t be our best selves, how can we ask others to be?
Each of us has the ability to make a difference with every thought and every action. So don’t anguish over who wins in the election. You have work to do within. Healing the country starts within your own healing. None of us can control the external world but we can have compassion for all and take action against injustice towards people, animals and our planet. The only way to combat negative energy and hatred is through positive, loving energy towards All Beings.
